Portal: Desk Lamp for Programmers
Making use of raw materials for a simple but intuitive desktop product.
The form follows a minimal, geometric language to integrate well with its environment in a subtle, unobtrusive fashion. Visible structural members give the product a visceral feel.
The moving members are optimised for space efficiency and lit surface area. The twin rotating arms allow for a larger angle and especially a wide desk to be directly lit at any point. To allow the product to fit a larger number of desks, an extendable rail was developed which carries a sliding housing for the light. When not needed for directional light the product offers a backlight position behind the screen for ambient lighting. This has been shown to reduce eye fatigue.
